Welcome to Day 4 of 5 of Ideas to help get you and your family into the Christmas spirit! (Teacher Mom, edition).
No matter where you live, December is filled with opportunities to embrace the magic of the holiday season.
Whether you’re looking for budget-friendly outings or free activities, there are plenty of ways to make lasting memories with your family.
Here are five ideas that will help you and your loved ones soak up the Christmas spirit.
1. Local Holiday Light Displays
(Often Free)
Most communities have neighborhoods, parks, or city squares that come alive with dazzling Christmas lights in December.
Pile the family into the car, grab some hot cocoa, and drive through to enjoy the spectacle.
For a more immersive experience, look for walking paths or events with synchronized music and lights.
Many of these displays are free, though some might request a small donation.
2. Christmas Markets or Craft Fairs
(Budget-Friendly)
Holiday markets are wonderful places to find unique gifts, enjoy festive food, and soak in the seasonal atmosphere.
These markets often feature live music, handmade crafts, and tasty treats like roasted nuts or hot cider.
While some markets may have a small entry fee, many are free to explore, and window shopping is a great no-cost activity!
Just search your city or local cities and Christmas fairs or markets.
3. Local Libraries or Community Centers (Free Activities)
Libraries and community centers often host free holiday events in December, such as storytimes, craft workshops, or family movie nights.
These events are perfect for engaging kids in the season’s magic without spending a dime.
Check your local listings for Christmas-themed activities, like making ornaments or holiday story hours featuring classics like The Polar Express.
4. Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks
(Budget-Friendly)
No matter where you live, you can probably find some ice skating rinks.
It is a timeless winter tradition that instantly brings festive vibes.
Many cities set up temporary outdoor rinks in December, often in beautifully decorated locations with twinkling lights and holiday music.
Admission is usually affordable, and some places even offer free skate nights.
Don’t forget to bundle up and snap some family photos on the ice!
5. A Christmas Tree Farm or Winter Nature Walk
(Free or Budget-Friendly)
One of my family’s favorite traditions is to visit a local Christmas tree farm.
We usually go every November (near Thanksgiving- yes, we are those people).
They typically have hot cocoa available, Christmas wreaths, and lights and decor to look at. The kids absolutely love running around the tree farms and having a great time.
If there’s no tree farm nearby, take a winter nature walk at a local park.
To help you moms manage the chaos, bring along a thermos of hot chocolate and enjoy the crisp air, while collecting pinecones or spotting festive decorations in nature.
Bonus Location:
If you’re lucky enough to live near snow-covered areas, snow tubing is an exhilarating activity that the whole family can enjoy.
Many ski resorts or winter parks offer tubing hills at an affordable rate.
It’s a great way to get outdoors and make the most of the season’s snowy charm!
If you live in a warmer climate, look for indoor snow parks or artificial tubing hills for a similar experience.
Remember, the most important part is spending time with family during the Holiday season!
The colder months can be a little ‘depressing’ for some, but try and find ways to make it more exciting.
Get out, drive around, and explore the magical places that are just around the corner from you!
